About

Do any of the following questions resonate with you?…

  • Do you feel a lack of strength stops you doing the things you want?
  • Are you worried about getting injured by doing those activities?
  • Have you thought about trying to get stronger but don’t know where to start?
  • Have you delayed starting through not wanting to make an existing injury worse?
  • Do you worry about becoming less mobile in the future?
  • Do you have any other health concerns related to being inactive?

This blog will aim to give you the knowledge and confidence to make getting strong a less scary concept and to introduce the benefits of strength training.

Benefits:

There are multiple benefits of strength training at all ages but especially as we get older.

We naturally lose muscle mass as we age (sarcopenia) and this can have a dramatic effect on the quality of our lives.

By challenging our muscles by the appropriate amount we can maintain and increase their strength.

This can benefit you in the following ways:

  • Keeping you on the golf course, tennis courts, dance floor, etc
  • Giving you the energy to keep up with your grandchildren
  • Allowing you to get up from a chair without groaning
  • Increasing your confidence in getting up from the floor.

Recent research points towards strength training being one of the most beneficial treatments for the majority of musculoskeletal conditions.  It also proves to be the best approach to reduce the chances of them happening in the first place.

Strength training has also been shown to be more effective at fat loss than other forms of exercises such as running.

Yes, if approached in the wrong way, strength training can result in injury (just like any other form of exercise). This blog will help you to reduce the risks associated with this brilliant form of exercise.

About Me:

My name is Chris Tiley, I am a physiotherapist with over 14 years experience. This gives me a good understanding of the injuries that you might be worried about sustaining.  More importantly, I know how beneficial resistance training is in the treatment of existing injuries.

I have worked in various settings including:

  • Hospitals (both in the UK and Canada)
  • Rehabilitation units
  • Sports teams (including British Parasnowsport and Reading FC Academy)
  • Private clinics (and now working for myself – Chris Tiley Physiotherapy).

Within all these roles, but especially within British ParaSnowsport I’ve routinely incorporated strength programs whilst adapting them around various disabilities and injuries.

I’m passionate about introducing strength training to those who never thought that they would be able to do it.

I love seeing the results that they achieve, seeing their confidence grow and seeing how much it brings back to their everyday lives.

I am writing this blog with the hope of sharing this passion and helping inspire more people.
