"I persevered and got a little stronger, ran a little longer and within a year I did my first half marathon. I've done 12 now as well as two marathons."

This months ‘Lifter for Life’ story will introduce you to Josie, who shares her story with Never Too Old to Lift.

In this post you will hear about Josie’s previous experience with exercise and lifting weights. She explains what has motivated her to start the process of getting stronger.

Meet Josie

When and Why Did you Start?

I’m currently 68 and I started running when I was 61. I just got up on my birthday and thought ‘theres got to be more to life than this”.

At the time I was working 60 hrs a week, drinking too much red wine at night and smoking too much. So I went for a run and it nearly killed me!

I persevered and got a little stronger, ran a little longer and within a year I did my first half marathon. I’ve done 12 now as well as two marathons.

About 3 years ago I started body combat twice a week and loved it (I still kept up the running).

Then last January I took on a challenge for charity to do a workout every day, so to up the interest level I started body pump. I absolutely loved it and am completely hooked now!

What Does Your Exercise Routine Look Like?

When the gym is open I go twice a week (as well as the classes). My routine starts with 15 minutes cardio, usually the treadmill. This is followed by 3 sets of 12 repetitions on the weight machines and finish with 2km on the rowing machine.

I love the gym but I’m equally motivated at home. In my home gym I have a treadmill, weights, ab roller and resistance bands. During lockdown I do a morning and evening workout, some times online and sometimes with my daughter who is very keen, she inspired me initially.

What Motivates You Now

My aims for fitness are to keep my muscles and bones healthy. Maintaining good mental health is just as important to me.

I’m also in the London Marathon Ballot, so fingers crossed!

I didn’t really have any barriers to starting all this. My family are very supportive and a little bit in awe I think.

Being 4’10″and 7 stone, I’m never going to be in with the big boys for lifting but I can comfortably deadlift 15kg and do clean and press reps with 12kg.

Do You Have Advice for Anyone Wanting to Start?

If I were to give advice to someone my age that wants to do weights I would say to start small and build up gradually. Listen to your body but don’t be afraid. Learn to lift with technique to protect yourself, and enjoy.
